here are your current winds. 15 here in town. 20 in hagerstown. 15 in manassas. off to the east even. winds will be with us all day today. we'll still be somewhat breezy tonight as we're in the wake of that cold front. colder temperatures with wind around today. satellite radar, mix of clouds and sun. more sunshine build in this afternoon. we have had a few lake affect snow showers set up there in southern pennsylvania. and one or two did slip into northern maryland. but i'm not anticipating much other than sunshine. and plain old cold temperatures with lots of wind. highs mid to upper 30s here. make sure the kids are ready for a cold day. more on the weather coming up. let's do traffic and julie wright has your roads. >> it's been a tough commute out there especially those on 66. that's where we find sky

fox. hovering above 66 leaving fair oaks in towards the capitol beltway. wall to wall traffic on 66 from fair oaks towards the beltway but out of manassas. let's go to those maps. the crash occurred before you reach 29. again, leaving gainsville to centerville 34 minute drive headed east and that slow down we showed you. southbound along 370 from buckeye's town to 134, 32 minute commute southbound to frederick and out towards montgomery village avenue. accident activity has been reported. pop up the camera there. lanes are open south of that headed out towards four corners. 29 at fair land for the accident. lanes are open between college park and bethesda. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> all right. thank you very much. our top story, 6 students in prince georges county have

been killed this school year alone. this tragic trend began back in august with a home invasion. three more teenagers were killed by late january. two more teens were gunned down this week. the latest happened last night in forestville. >> comes about 24 hours after a 15-year-old was shot reportedly over a pair of shoes. melanie alnwick is live outside the school with the latest on these cases. far too many. one is too many really . >> reporter: good morning, allison. the feeling of sadness and grief that was here yesterday has now turned into shock and disbelief. police at this point say there is no indication the murders are connected. however, people in the neighborhood do tell fox 5 all of the students did know each other and there is talk on social media about a possible on-going conflict here and fears it may escalate. the most

recent murder happened around 5:30 tuesday when police rushed to investigate yet another shooting. this time in the 3700 block of donell drive in forestville. two young men 18 years old shot in a parking lot. one in grave condition. the other pronounced dead at the hospital attended suitland hospital. he was in the same grade as charles walker who was shot and killed on monday. the two scenes are a little less than five miles from each other. police believe robbery was a motive. carrying a new pair of timber land boots who they say was a gift for his girlfriend. this time saying they are horrified and adding we cannot go another day without addressing these unspeakable acts of violence. they are asking for the community's support as well. with 6 teens murders, community leaders are pleading from help from parents

and neighbors. >> this is not some wild crime spree. this is a social issue. this is a social problem that stems from what's happening from our young people. if we don't address that problem we continue to react. we can arrest and prosecute and it still doesn't solve it unless we deal with our young people. >> police chief says they have developed leads in the case and progressing quickly and developed suspects there. we don't have you dated information about that second 18-year-old's condition. at last check he was listed in grave condition. so still a lot of threats here that they've got to weave together and see whether indeed there was any sort of on-going confli whether these things were a tragic coincidence. back to you. >> another man is dead following a late night shooting.

this happened before 11:00 p.m. a 30-year-old man was killed in the 3600 block in branch avenue. the suspect who police say was high on pcp at the time is in custody. tony. >> allison, a woman found dead inside a burning apartment on monday was pregnant. family members shared this photo of 38-year-old jennifer lynn peerson. they say she was stabbed before the fire began. neighbors called 911 after smelling smoke coming from the second floor. firefighters forced their way inside and found pearson. no arrests have been made in her death. developing news around the nation and the world, first to kansas city where natural gas explosion has left an entire block in ruins. 14 people were hurt following the blast and

fire yesterday evening. right now emergency crews are using cadaver dogs to search for anyone who may be missing. witnesses say they smelled natural gas for hours in the area before the blast. no official cause has been released but the utility that supplies the gas says a contractor doing work may have hit a gas line. >> second day of a bail hearing for oscar pistorius is underway in south africa. and police are presenting a mass massive amount of evidence. and the courtroom broke into gaffs that a witness who heard shouts was 500 yards away. they found two boxes of testosterone. the substance is herbal remedy that athletes take. he denies killing his girlfriend and says he thought she was an intruder. back here at home, the man

convicted of murdering chandra levy could get a trial. the prosecution was quote predicated on a lie. the defense team says they have new information that could question the testimony of one witness and under cut the government's case. the judge will hold another hearing on that information in april. >> with the budget sequester set to hit in just over a week, president obama issues a warning. coming up with a solution or entire nation will face serious consequences. sarah simmons joins us live. >> inching closer to the march 1st deadline. if congress cannot strike a deal, $85 billion in spending cuts will take affect. law makers are embattled in a blame game. republicans are quick to claim the sequester was the president's idea and one

mr. obama adamantly defended. the president is pointing fingers at republicans saying it is up to them to avoid a budget pitfall. experts say at this point the blame game needs to end and a solution needs to be made. >> this is ridiculous. $85 billion and a $3.6 trillion government. 5% domestic spending. 7% defense spending. the world will not end. >> it will jeopardize military readiness. creating investments and education and medical research. >> experts say the sequester only represents a small fraction of federal spending and the debt will continue to grow every year whether a deal is reached or not. if there is a silver lining, both democrats and republicans agree the economy would take a hit if federal spending cuts are made.

we have a news alert this morning on cyber attacks from china. internet security experts pointing their cursors

at the chinese military from american military and corporate computers. china is denying a report that it's responsible for the attacks. but the virginia firm specifically names this plain building that is home to a chinese cyber espionage unit. getting deals on pentagon contractors. a day after burger king says twitter account was hacked, jeep says the same thing. cadillac is owned by chrysler. jeep is not the only corporation reporting cyber attacks. apple says some of its macintosh computers were attacked. >> the cash strapped postal service is trying its hand at side action.

in less than a month catholic cardinals will gather at the vatican to begin the process of electing a new pope. >> the procedure is called a conclave. may take place without one american cardinal. former los angeles archbishop roger mahoney was stripped last month after he and others shielded child abuse. some critics say having maheney participate would be a huge embarrassment for the church. >> rumored to be frontrunnered to proceed the pope.

s of congress used a quote meat cleaver approach to fixing the nation's fiscal problem and the result will be what he termed brutal spending cuts. will start next friday if congress doesn't move swiftly. we turn to our team of political experts today. democrat political strategist peter fenn. good to see you and while jim is away. we are happy to welcome backfill up stutts. good morning. >> good morning. >> sequestration all the time today. let's start with what the president said. peter i'll start with you. coming down hard on republicans saying no thought was given to this massive round of spending cuts. what does the white house need to own? >> well, what's going on now is each side is pushing the other trying to up the anteon this. the hopes some have they can

avert this. they put it off for two months. they didn't solve the problem. and now it's becoming more and more clear what's happening. you're talking now about 700,000 jobs being lost possibly in this economy in the next year. you are talking about a situation where 800,000 military people are seriously affected. you are talking about head start kids going off the role. you are talking about meals on wheels. you are talking about 270,000 people with mental health problems. this is now a political game a bit. at one point the speaker said i got 98% of what i wanted. saying it was the president's idea. one of those things no one thought could happen but looks like it very well might. >> i did hear that this week saying this whole thing was the

president's idea. then you hear the president come out. what's the real deal here? >> according to bob woodward, it was the president's idea. when president obama comes out and trots out cops and kids yesterday, here's the bottom line though is that he agreed to this in the summer. he knew these education cuts were going to come. he knew these mental health and military cuts were going to come. he now comes out and castigates the republicans. that's the political game. that's what he should be doing from a political stand point. the republicans yesterday put out e-mail statements. the president's out there on the podium with cops behind him and the republicans are outputting out email statements and this becomes a messaging battle about whether anything will get done. and the republicans should be out front and center screaming

the truth is the president proposed this back in the summer. >> so did the congress. and the congress goes out for nine days. they go home for nine days. they have to put out twitter accounts because they are not there to do anything about it. the difficulty and the frustration and i share it both ways. there's plenty of blame to go around in this thing. everybody thought such an effort would not happen. and looks like it's going to happen. but they agreed and they wanted to do it and they said okay we'll be able to solve the problem. if you've got on the one side on the republican side. oh, revenue is off the table. how are you going to have? that's the problem. then all you say is we're going to cut the pentagon. going to cut these mental health programs. going to cut education. there's no give on millionaires and

billionaires. >> this comes back to a fundamental belief of mine which is this: who got us into this mess? politicians. who has to pay for it? the people who create jobs and people doing thing the right way. we blame them for everything. that's where i get frustrated in this process. the politicians created this and need to figure it out without blaming other people. let me say one other thing. on the defense cuts, let's take the sequestration defense cut, we're going from if sequestration happens, go from $5.7 trillion in spending for defense to $5.2 trillion in defense spending. so over a ten year period 5.7 to 5.2, are we kicking a can down the street? what are we doing?

>> part of it is we're going to get savings from the end of two wars which is what drove this deficit problem. here's where i think we have to look seriously. we've got to figure out a way to do this without hurting people. and my sister works for the environmental protection agency. she called me and says everybody says it's only one day a week. that's a 20% cut. that's what's going to happen to folks. >> is that the immediate? >> within a month. you have to give them a month. if we don't do something, some could be fired. but who can take a 20% pay cut? >> our time is fleeting. will this happen? >> we do think something will happen. i think the republicans will ultimately agree to no tax increases but maybe loophole closures the president is putting out there. i don't think there's going to be massive tax increase. but i do think the loop there may be

the district's international art's community has kicked off a line up of talent from nordic neighbors. >> nordic cool features more than 700 artists from finland, ice land and beyond. holly has more from the kennedy center. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. last night they had a big party to kick off this huge celebration. i know that because my guests are bleary eyed this morning but excited to be here. they are excited about this festival. jenny is with -- i'm keeping you awake. first of all, tell me about nordic cool and your excitement to be a part of this. >> this is all the nordic countries together working with culture. we have been able to make an insulation. architect office. an office in new york

and working to make this. >> this was commissioned just for this festival. and tell me a little about this. i have a hard time believing this all started out as plain sheets of plywood. >> that's where it starts. we sew together and glue it. and we attach them to a rope and wala here it is. >> how long did it take you to put this together? it didn't just ship as plain sheets. >> we shipped it over and worked for 7 days. we got help to lift it up to make sure both secure and to have the right shape. >> why plywood? >> we wanted to work with wood. we did research and figured out plywood has a very interesting history. the old egyptian started with the plywood.

18-year-old gunned down 24 hours after a 15-year-old was killed. both attended suitland high school. that's where we find melanie alnwick this morning. >> reporter: good morning. this morning the superintendent is meeting with school security team and there is a county wide task force to figure out ways to address the violence that has claimed the lives of these 6 high school students and with the last two of them here at suitland high school, the community is definitely reeling. it was about 5:30 tuesday when prince georges county police rushed to investigate another shooting. in the 3700 block of donnell drive. two shot. one pronounced dead. he was in the same grade as charles walker, the freshman shot and killed 4:20 monday. the two scenes a

little less than five miles from each other. robbery was the motive. walker was carrying a new pair of timber land boots who they say was a gift for his girlfriend. >> police have done their work. they will arrest the individuals. we will bring them to justice and we need our community to come together to ensure we're not just reacting. something greater has to be done. we need our parents to wrap their arms around their children to teach them the proper values. go to school. work hard. >> having to put out another statement saying this time they are horrified saying they cannot go another day without addressing these unspeakable acts of violence against our students asking for the community's support for the students, the teachers and the employees here at suitland high school. police at this point are telling us there is no indication that these two murders, the one monday and

that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> you'll be interested in this. disturbing new study that's out this morning, traffic deaths in the u.s. surged last year. there were about 36,000 deadly crashes last year. that's up from beg your pardon 35,000 in 2011. first time in 7 years traffic deaths have gone up. officials believe the improving economy and mild winters could be why more people are driving. also could be texting while driving. >> speaking of which, a heads up for virginia drivers, a ticket for texting while driving could cost you a lot more. a bill was passed by the senate yesterday increasing fines to $250. second offense fines would start at $500. the legislation is now awaiting the governor's signature. the law would make texting while driving a primary offense. it means drivers can be pulled over and ticketed for texting.

making headlines across the nation this morning, a gas explosion sparked massive fire inside a kansas city restaurant. cadaver dogs spent the night searching through the rubble to make sure no one was buried beneath. this takes up a whole city block. so far no reported deaths but the blast did injure more than a dozen people. the cause remains under investigation. a city official said it was believed a utility contractor may have hit something maybe a natural gas line by mistake. >> california, more people dead after a violent ram pain. 28-year-old ali syed killed a woman and sped away in his parents car. he killed two more

cardinal rules for paying with cash. good morning. what is rule number one, steve? >> good morning to you. i'll tell you what, rule number one, don't spend cash when cash is too costly. here's what i mean by that. if you are going to run your lifelike a cash-based business, visit the bank ahead of time. this is true where you are headed someplace where there is no easy exit. a stadium or concert or airport or night club and you are at the mercy of whatever that atm fee inside the building is. if you are out on the town and say i'm going to pay cash let me go to the atm but it's costing you $6 to take out $40. maybe you are better off paying with plastic. >> i like that. before we say i can't do it you say just try to do it. >> yeah, just try.

else. all three of our children went to suitland high school and my youngest child graduated from there last year. any of our violence has to stop. we're angry. i just had a long conversation with our state's attorney on the way over here about us pulling together and really going after what's happening in prince georges county. i want people to know this, crime overall is down. police department is doing a great job. our sheriff's department. we need to do more to reach out to our young people and folks out there. that's why we started the transforming initiative. it's not just about arresting people and locking them up. providing a wholistic approach to make them better. you can't have a program that lasts a month or a week. our young people need jobs. they need health insurance. they focus on where they are going to

go. that's what we have to provide to stop what's going on out there. >> these individual murders are being investigated. but do you have any sense of is there an under lying condition or something that's connecting these? is it possibly related to drugs, gangs? what do we know? >> there are a number of factors. some of them are related to gang activities which police are on top of. just like the young man that was killed who was a student at suitland. he went and bought a pair of shoes and was shot in the back. that right there is a sense less murder that happened here. wasn't doing anything wrong. that's not acceptable in prince georges county. but it also means the folks who are doing these crimes, one we're going to arrest the people and prosecute. but we have to go into these

neighborhoods and start changing them. that's why we're bringing in the wholistic approach. social services, family services, bring in job opportunities. we're going to do that and make prince georges county a safer place. crime overall in the county is down. but any murder is one too many. >> crime overall is down but clearly, the murders of six young people, that's quite striking and attention getting. >> it's disturbing which is why we will be working with the school system, the state's attorney office, our office to look at what we can provide for our young people to make sure this does not happen. >> let's talk about gun initiatives. do you think that what is happening right now will spur talk in the county or efforts in the county to get control of guns that are out there on the streets? >> certainly. there is never a wake up call. the fact we've had six young people who have

had their lives cut short should wake people up. there are too many guns out in the street. which is why i support the governor's initiative. we will be helping out as best we can. why we did a gun buy back program in our police department. we have to deal with violence and deal with those things they have opportunities to buy. >> we've been talking a lot about sequestration. the potential impact. and you have some -- a lot of the focus seems to be on fairfax county. you have grave concerns about how sequestration will affect. >> we do. federal workers. so that means when people are laid off or furloughed, that's going to have an impact on their ability to pay their mortgage, to buy groceries.

and so it's going to have a devastating impact in prince georges county. also, this will have an impact on funding that goes to our school system. that goes to our family services program. so we've got to take all of that into consideration at the same time preparing a budget to hand to the council. we want congress to get its act together. we need congress to get act together and give us an answer on going forward so we can prepare our budget at the local level. >> want to talk about the possible relocation of the fbi. this obviously would be a boom to the county. metro is kind of weighed in on this. and people in other counties are kind of crying foul and saying metro shouldn't be favoring one area over another area. >> one, metro is not favoring one area over the other.

they never do that. what we thought was a good deal in working with metro. we've been in talks with metro around our stations which are under developed for years. we think we have a great shot in getting the fbi to come here. we meet the criteria gsa has laid out. certainly the fact a number of federal workers that live in prince georges county is the lowest in the region. we think we have a good shot at it and all fair in this battle with fairfax. >> you are not getting -- are you saying you are not getting your fair share at this point? >> at this point we're not. if you look at it. look at where federal lease base is in the washington region, prince georges county does not have it. if you look at the metro stops we have where you can do transit orient development and what gsa is asking for, we have the best location. >> you have talked a lot about growth in the county and wanting

there to be continued growth and increase the tax base. there's this proposal for a new medical center. and my understanding is that there are three or four different locations where it can go. you are holding meetings about this on february 28th. >> we're going to be holding community meetings on the hospital which is a regional healthcare facility. it has to be in the central part of the county. we want to get people's input on where they think it should be. what they are looking for. provide healthcare but jobs. as we talk about what we have to offer our young people. both the coming of the fbi and the development of the hospital facility will provide job opportunities in prince georges county. >> there's been some concern expressed some of the sites aren't near metro stations. two or three miles away. are you hearing those concerns? >> we're certainly hearing those

2. >> right. >> you were born to play this instrument. >> yeah. >> you graduated and the london times did say you are the rising star in the piano. what does that mean when you hear that? >> nothing really. it's just about the music. i try to play well. it's evident that you enjoy it and play well. so tell me a little about being part of this festival and ice land music. what makes music ice landic? >> the scope of this festival is unique. i put together a program for my performance called the north is the state of mind. i'm associating with solitude and sort of private and intro version. >> we have some video of you playing. do you like to play as an soloist? do you prefer to play with an orchestra? do you like to do new works or

play the classics? >> i like to play good music. if it's solo, it's great. >> when you are playing at the piano do you realize the audience is out there or are you in your own world? >> best thing is to have a monologue. speak to yourself and sort of for the audience but try to make it a very private moment i'm sharing still. >> a private moment you are sharing. i like that. >> it is a paradox. >> you played last night at the big gayla. >> yes, a song i'm sure nobody will have heard. he was a doctor by profession. he practiced in the rural arts. beautiful area but very harsh. this is a song sung in ice land but i transcribed it for solo piano. >> very good.

and we do performances which we do for the children in the morning and for the adults in the evening. and the same performances. >> tell me about the two shows you are doing specifically the ones for the younger audiences. >> they are both for young/old audiences in the morning. the first one is hansen production where you meet a lot of his characters who are gathered together to celebrate his birthday. but they are not there. it's like a table set for 20 persons and it's all his kooshgs and look at the plates and the fork and knife and the chair and figure out oh, this is for the mermaid and this is for christian anderson himself. and if you take a good look at this table set over here, you recognize it must be
